CBD Professional: “I’m Having Bad Interactions With Kidney Transplant Rejection Medication”

A Cannabis Professional reached out with serious issues with a recent kidney transplant, doctors failed to warn her of this although they knew she used CBD:

Time and time again we report on CBD: Drug interactions – how pharmaceuticals simply don’t get along with this cannabinoid and doses of either the extract or the prescribed dose must be mediated in order to not have a digestive enzyme battle for metabolism. In the case of Michelle DeMello, this issue could have easily cost her life. Quickly when she made contact action had to be taken – an immediate cessation of the cannabinoid medicine until such time she could stabilize. Her fight to gain a Kidney transplant was one of its own, the battle to stay alive while waiting was yet another. But now she had what she needed and faced losing it to a plant extract she’s very knowledgeable about. Or was it the plant extract?

When a powerful antioxidant like CBD is combined with an immunosuppressant – or any type of pharmaceutical – the outcome is almost never the cannabinoid causing damage. It’s the pharmaceutical failing to metabolize and then doing what the FDA product insert warns of – but in Michelle’s case, the CBD stopped the drug from working. While some would say “Michelle sells CBD, she should know all of this” – that’s not very fair. When a person studies CBD: Drug interactions it’s all based on dosage. So, if a person like her goes with a low dose generally speaking they won’t see any type of problems at all – and that’s what she was doing. But, with certain drugs even the lowest of doses over a period of time build up in the system – it doesn’t take long – and they will disable a drug that must metabolize in order to do its job. These drugs are known as prodrugs. Some examples are pain medication like Codeine – it metabolizes into morphine and that’s what stops the pain. CBD interferes with that the same way it does with the rejection medications Michelle was using. Instead of gaining less efficacy from a pain medication like the Codeine – in her case, it was gaining less efficacy from a drug meant to keep a transplanted organ from failing.

We can brush aside CBD: Drug Interactions and Cannabis: Drug interactions if we’d like, but that’s irresponsible. I’m grateful for Michelle as she stepped out and spoke on a subject that can’t be comfortable – and in doing so she’s educated the world.
